“The Four Notes”

by alyssapelish

I’m really happy to be featured alongside the tremendous writers in this fall’s issue of Conjunctions.

So … maybe you’re in the mood for an eerie story? In “The Four Notes,” an isolated programmer who designs privacy-enhancing software is haunted by a very old melody.

(Thanks to Erich Strom, my stalwart reader and editor. Thanks to Rebecca Porte and Ben Wurgaft, who read early drafts. Thanks to Zachary Garrett and Misha Lepetic for trying to help me understand code (it’s not their fault if I got it wrong). And thanks to Nathan Shields for his insights into Brahms’s Op. 118, No. 6 (also not his fault if got it wrong.)
